Are you planning to get married on the beach, and want a great way to incorporate something unique or symbolic to your wedding ceremony?
Have you considered a sand ceremony?
Maybe you have heard of sand ceremonies, but are not sure exactly how to go about doing one. Here are our best tips for how to have a successful and meaningful sand ceremony at your beach wedding.
Darcelle & Justin’s Playa del Carmen wedding
1. What is a sand ceremony?
A sand ceremony is a unity ritual performed during a wedding ceremony to signify the symbolic joining of lives, of being forever entwined and interconnected. (How romantic is that?)
This can be performed by just the bride and groom, or it can be a great way to incorporate a child, other loved ones, the wedding party, or whoever you want!
2. How do we perform a sand ceremony?
- Everyone who is participating in the sand ceremony will have their own chosen color of sand in a vile or urn.
- When the time comes in the wedding ceremony, the wedding officiant will either say a few carefully chosen words about the blending of lives, or you can choose this moment to say your own vows, separate from your wedding vows.
- Everybody takes turns adding some of their color of sand to a large glass urn or vase.
- At the end, or the top, pour together to blend the different colors of sand.

3. Why should we do a sand ceremony?
If you are having a beach wedding ceremony, other symbolic rituals of unity, such as a unity candle, will fail miserably against the ocean breezes.
A sand ceremony is a fabulous alternative. Plus after your wedding ceremony, you are left with a lasting keepsake that represents an incredible moment in your life!
4. Where can we find a kit for a sand ceremony?
You have lots of easy options here. Sand ceremony kits can be found in:
- art supply stores
- craft stores
- some toy stores
- or you can find them online right here!
Expect a sand ceremony kit to include 2 colors of sand and a glass vase, or you can buy your own sand and provide your own vase that has special meaning for you. I also love the idea of using sand from the beach you will be married on, or somewhere special, like where you got engaged.
5. What colors of sand should we use?
Choose meaningful colors for your sand ceremony. For you, this might mean your wedding colors, or your favorite colors, or colors that represent your personalities or certain beliefs. Do NOT use two closely colored sand colors, such as two light pastels, or you will not get the impact of the different colors coming together. And Do NOT use black as one of your sand colors because, in the final blending of the sand, it makes speckles.

6. Is there anything else we should keep in mind when planning a sand ceremony?
Yes. Remember to get your urn or vase engraved ahead of time, and make sure it is big enough to hold all of the sand from the other vials you will pour into it. Also, if a beach wedding is in your plans then consider using a funnel to pour the sand into the vase. You never know how windy your wedding day will be!
Whatever unique spin you put on your sand ceremony, it will be a great idea for adding your own personal touch at your beach wedding.
