Shelli and Kevin are Fun In The Sun Weddings’ newest newlyweds! New Year’s Eve will always be this bride and groom’s special anniversary and is a date that weaves through their happily-ever-after.
Here is their story…
How They Met
Shelli and Kevin met on New Year’s Eve, 2017. The North Dallas single friends meetup group was hosting a party they both volunteered to help set up, in an effort to find some compelling reason to go. Kevin was trying to look busy when Shelli walked in and their eyes met. Shelli said “Hi” and Kevin muttered something unintelligible and then managed to introduce himself. Over several hours of engineering an amazing balloon drop together, their conversations were effortless, and their first kiss came later after midnight.
How They Got Engaged
Fast forward to the following New Year’s Eve, when Shelli and Kevin celebrated their first anniversary. They shared a delicious dinner, reminisced, and he gave her the sweetest love letter. He got down on one knee and gave her the most beautiful ring she had ever seen.
Why a Destination Wedding in Cancun?
On a birthday trip to a small resort near the town of Puerto Morelos, they both fell in love with the area, the shopping and eating at the local restaurants. They knew they wanted to be married on the beach, and the rest was just details.
The first challenge was finding a resort that would accommodate a New Year’s Eve date. They reached out to several resorts before finding and awesome travel agent; Hannah Cote with Legacy Travel. She got them on the right track with El Dorado Royale Resort and was a big help to their wedding guests too.
Her Beach Wedding Dress
The bride found an amazing wedding dress designer named Martin McCrea and LOVED her designs. She only sells locally in Tucson, so she ordered her perfect beach wedding dress online. She even called Shelli personally when she had questions about measurements. Working with her was a dream!
The Welcome Bags
The day after arriving in Mexico for the wedding the bride and groom went into Puerto Morelos and picked out locally made beautiful beach totes for their wedding welcome bags. They included Mexican chocolates, bath bombs and interties for the week’s events. They also included custom tumblers made from Summit Engraving Ltd on Etsy, which their guests loved for keeping drinks cold throughout the day.
Shelli and Kevin recommend that future destination brides don’t overthink the welcome bags. Do not pack dozens of tiny bottles of sunscreen, bug spray, hand sanitizer, tums, etc. Spend your welcome bag budget on a few really nice things that your guests will actually appreciate!
The Wedding Day Details
A beach wedding meant staying true to all things tropical when it came to the wedding décor. Luckily their resort and wedding planner from Lomas Travel, made this super easy with beautiful options for flowers and décor, and they chose pink tropical flowers for everything.
Staying true to the Mexican flavor, the bride and groom had a full taco bar at the reception and a donkey pay them a visit after the ceremony.
El Dorado Royale even made them a custom cake topper for the cake!
Their Favorite Wedding Moment
The ‘First Look‘ was a new concept and they are happy that it was something they decided to do. They chose a beautiful garden close to the ceremony location, but on the wedding day morning, the sprinklers went on! A little panic ensued to get them turned off before the photo shoot, and they had an amazing time sharing those first moments together before the ceremony. It was exactly what they needed to kick off the wedding day celebration.
The Bride’s Advice
The bride and groom wanted to write their own vows, but days before the wedding neither had done it yet. And so, at the resort, they sat together and wrote their vows.
It was a fun exercise us both, and we highly recommend it!
Shelli and Kevin, it has been such a pleasure sharing your wedding adventure, and we look forward to seeing you back our direction for a future New Year’s Eve anniversary! Congratulations!
