Doesn’t getting married on the beach in Mexico sound perfect, and fun and wonderfully romantic? We can’t imagine doing it any other way! Why wouldn’t you want to take the vacation of a lifetime with all of your favourite people to a tropical paradise where the evenings are warm and the margaritas are cold? And then to top it all off, throw a huge party to celebrate your wedding!
We know that you’re excited and ready dive into planning this adventure, but let’s make sure that you have all of your ducks in a row first. After all, this is more than just your average holiday from the UK. There are things you need to arrange if you want to get married in Mexico.
Decide where to get married in Mexico
Your wedding venue’s availability is the base for all of the arrangements you need to make for your destination wedding. After you have weeded through the endless options of the best wedding resorts in Mexico, or the best off-site wedding venues in Riviera Maya if that’s more your style, then you will be able to settle on your wedding date. Be sure to consider not only the wedding dates they have available, but also the time of day and ceremony location they have available for your wedding on the beach.
Hire a local wedding planner
If you plan to get married at an all-inclusive resort, a wedding coordinator will be appointed to you. But if you would prefer the freedom that comes with getting married on the beach at an off-site venue, then you will need to find yourselves a wedding planner. Make sure they are a local professional with great credentials and references because this person is going to be orchestrating the biggest day of your life! Don’t try to plan a wedding in Mexico on your own, and don’t bring down your friend’s cousin sister to coordinate for you. You don’t even know what you don’t know about getting married here. Send Save-The-Date announcements
When your wedding guests need to travel from the UK, or from anywhere for that matter, it’s proper destination wedding etiquette to give them loads of advance notice in the form of a Save The Date announcement. At least nine months is a good idea if you want them to be able to join you. This way, they can start planning and saving for the biggest party of the year!
Hire a destination wedding travel agent
Arranging for a wedding travel specialist to book and organize all the travel arrangements for you and guests will save you from wanting to tear your hair out. With so many other details that need your attention, the last thing you want to be doing is chasing down your wedding guests for RSVPs, deposits or documentation, right? A travel professional will take care of the nitty gritty stuff for you. (Contact us and we can refer you to the best travel agents!)
As far as travel arrangements go, a big part of yours will depend on whether you choose to have a legal wedding or a symbolic one. Which brings us to the next point….

Can you get legally married in Mexico?
As you move into the finer details of planning a wedding in Mexico, you will need to decide if you want to have a legal or symbolic wedding ceremony. You have the choice to get legally married in the UK, and then have your wedding in Mexico be symbolic only, or you can just get legally married here in Mexico instead.
You will more than likely qualify for a civil ceremony, however, if you are divorced or widowed, you will need to wait a year, which is pretty standard, and the certificate will need to be translated into Spanish and added to the documents you will need to provide.

Decide when to arrive for your wedding in Mexico
If you want to have a legal wedding ceremony, then you need to book your travel so that you are in Mexico at least three working days before your wedding day, and the same goes for your four witnesses. In that time, the two of you will be getting blood tests, and yes they must be done in Mexico.
If you just want to have a symbolic ceremony, though, you can book your arrival date for whenever it is most convenient for you.
What wedding decor can you bring with you to Mexico?
Before you fly, make sure that you (or that travel consultant you hired) gets the most up-to-date regulations for what you can bring on the airplane and into Mexico. There are loads of cool beach wedding decor ideas that will likely pop up, and you will wonder how you are supposed to pack them all down with you.
But you don’t have to! There are several great decor companies in the Riviera Maya now, and you can probably save a lot of weight in your luggage by just arranging for those personalised maracas, sparklers, or centrepieces to be waiting for you here when you arrive. Get your marriage certificate apostilled
For your legal wedding ceremony to be recognised as such back in the UK, your marriage certificate will need to be apostilled. That might sound a little daunting, but not to worry, your wedding coordinator or wedding planner is going to advise you on this process, and hold your hand through it all.
And last but not least!
One of the most important arrangements you will need to make for your beach wedding is who you will trust with capturing the biggest day of your life – your professional wedding photographer! The best wedding photographers in the Riviera Maya book up quickly, so don’t leave this decision until the last minute. In fact, why not jump on this one right now, and contact the best photographers in Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancun?
