Welcome back!
If you’re just joining us, we’ve been exploring the weird and bizarre origins of our time-honored wedding traditions. Digging deep to understand how and why we blindly follow many superstitious wedding day behaviors.
When I was a bride, I never gave much thought to why I was doing some of these things. Now that we have photographed hundreds of weddings, however, and seen these same traditions repeated over and over, curiosity finally got the best of this cat for the reasons behind some of this stuff.

What’s with the identical bridesmaid dresses?
Have you ever wondered WHY Bridesmaids all wear the same dress?
And nooooo, it did NOT start out as an act of public shaming! Here’s the truth….
Let’s take a trip waaaaaaay back in time. The ancient Romans can be blamed for this one. They believed that any happy event would invite evil spirits who threatened to thwart the joyful festivities. In order to confuse these nasty Netherworlders, the bridesmaids, as well as the bride, all used to wear the same dress! They thought that if it was impossible to tell the ladies apart, there could be no meddling in the marriage ceremony. Identically dressed women would buy the happy couple enough time to say their vows, and they could then embark on their life of wedded bliss.
This superstition served the dual purpose of also confusing any heartbroken exes, out to crash the party and putting an end to the nuptials.

Knowing now what the real reason is that bridesmaid dresses are typically the same, I am an even bigger advocate for not forcing a short, robust brunette into the exact same dress as the tall, willowy blonde. Especially in a less traditional setting like getting married on the beach. What a great opportunity for you to add some color and pizzazz to your wedding palette, and to let your Besties show off their assets! Personally, I love the mismatched bridesmaid dresses shown in the Huffington Post.
